Thom Barrie
Editor-in-Chief, 1993–2020
Thom Barrie served as the founding Editor-in-Chief of the ISSA Journal, guiding the publication from its inaugural issue in December 1993 through nearly three decades of growth. Under his leadership, the Journal established itself as a premier source of practitioner-focused cybersecurity insight. Thom oversaw the development of the Journal’s content standards, built its contributor community, and expanded its coverage to reflect the rapidly evolving security landscape. His tenure is marked by editorial stability, a broadening global readership, and a deep commitment to elevating professional voices within the cybersecurity field.
Jack Freund, PhD
Editor-in-Chief, 2021–Present
Jack Freund succeeded Thom Barrie in 2021, bringing a quantitative and research-driven perspective to the Journal’s editorial direction. His leadership has focused on bridging the worlds of governance, cyber risk quantification, security engineering, and executive strategy. Jack has modernized the editorial process, standardized peer-review workflows, expanded reviewer development, and strengthened the Journal’s engagement with emerging areas such as AI security, cyber insurance, privacy engineering, and metrics-driven decision support. His editorial vision emphasizes clarity, rigor, and relevance for practitioners and researchers alike.
